The primary emphases of MIL-STD-810H are tailoring a materiel item’s environmental design and test limits to the conditions that the specific materiel will experience throughout its service life, and establishing laboratory test methods that replicate the effects of environments on materiel, rather than trying to reproduce the environments themselves.
MIL-STD-810H, Method 510.5 Sand and Dust method is used to evaluate all mechanical, optical, electrical, electronic, electrochemical, and electromechanical devices likely to be exposed to dry blowing sand or blowing dust-laden atmospheres.

MIL-STD-810H Dust procedure: This test is performed to help evaluate the ability of materiel to resist the effects of dust that may obstruct openings, penetrate into cracks, crevices, bearings, and joints, and to evaluate the effectiveness of filters. |
The particle size distribution is 100% by weight less than 150 microns, with a median diameter of 20 ± 5 microns. |
Available in the following containers: One gallon jar (3.5kg net weight) 30 gallon drum (105 kg. net weight) 55 gallon drum (192.5 kg. net weight) |

MIL-STD-810H Sand procedure: This test is performed to help evaluate the ability of materiel to be stored and operated in blowing sand conditions without degrading performance, effectiveness, reliability, and maintainability due to abrasion (erosion) or clogging effects of large, sharp-edged particles. |
The particle size distribution is from 150 microns to 850 microns, with 90 ± 5% by weight smaller than 600 microns and larger than 149 microns, and at least 5% by weight 600 microns and larger. |
Available in One gallon jars (4.5kg net weight) |
Please note MIL-STD-810G was superseded by MIL-STD-810H in 2014. |
